sCoolSpace is the virtual schoolyard in which pupils from primary schools can meet each other online and share their work. A 3D world, populated by avatars and constructed using basic building materials with which children express their creativity. It is a safe place, as only children and teachers of that particular school have access. A place that is always accessible, wherever you are. In school, at home, or somewhere else.
sCoolSpace consists of several components. Each child is represented by an avatar that he or she can customise by uploading their face and virtual outfit. Furthermore there are 3 types of spaces: a school space, a class space and an individual space for each pupil. Children can express themselves in their own environment or visit fellow pupils’ spaces. These spaces can be altered by adding floor or wall tiles and uploading photos or drawings to appear on these panels.
Pupils can communicate with fellow students while navigating the avatar world. Either via chat to all avatars in that space or by launching FaceTime for a one-on-one session. When using a single Emoji character as a message, that character will float above their avatar as a signifier, allowing children to express on a more non verbal level. In order to meet up in a particular space pupils can invite each other. Even when they are not online.
Next to the building aspect can sCoolSpace be used as a presentation tool to accompany lessons, workshops or projects. By enabling the life-sized augmented reality viewing mode the school comes alive in a unique immersive way. Children can look around and see the virtual space mixed with the real world, all through the eyes of their avatar. As if they are really there!
